Chelsea have made an official bid of £35 million for Fernando Torres in a deal that will in no doubt, heat up in the next few days as the deadline for the January transfer window 2011 approaches. The opening of the cheque book by Roman Abramovich seems to have been finally confirmed after Chelsea made this mega bid earlier today. Fernando Torres has been one player of great interest to Carlo Ancelotti ever since he took over at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea had a £50 million bid rejected in the summer. Chelsea looked to have put an end to that
transfer for some time, but they have once again reignited their interest in Torres after David Luiz’s reported move to Stamford Bridge fell through.
Benfica today confirmed that they have failed to come to terms with Chelsea and the reported £26 million move for David Luiz is off. Chelsea seem to have reacted to the news very quickly after they shifted their attention from signing a defender to going for a centre forward. I said yesterday that signing a defender will not change Chelsea’s status in the title race, while a striker would be of massive help. It seems that either Roman Abramovich or Carlo Ancelotti has read my blog and decided to go for Fernando Torres. A few weeks ago signing Fernando Torres for £35 million would have seemed absurd, but four goals in three games have reignited the spark in him. He is now probably the same player that he was a few years ago when he arrived at Liverpool.
There are rumours that Torres has a £50 million buyout clause in his contract and with only three days to go before the end of this transfer window, Chelsea could well possibly increase the bid. Fernando Torres also looks to be interested in moving to Chelsea after he reportedly asked Liverpool to consider the offer from Chelsea. Liverpool are also trying to sign Luis Suarez from Ajax for a deal believed to be around £25 million. It could possibly trigger them to let Torres leave in order to recoup that money. Signing Torres at this stage of the season might do some damage to the morale of Didier Drogba or Nicolas Anelka, but it will certainly boost our title chances massively.
