Chelsea fans can rejoice at a new signing after the club agreed a deal with the Dutch club Vitesse to bring midfielder Marco van Ginkel to Stamford Bridge. Van Ginkel has been on the radar of several English clubs in the last few months. The 20-year-old, though, has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea due to the good relationship with Vitesse. Even though the club has not revealed the transfer fee, it is believed to be around £10 million.
Voted as the Dutch player of the year last season, fans can expect a player similar to Michael Ballack in stature. Standing at 6 ft 1 in, he certainly provides a physical presence amidst the likes of Juan Mata and Eden Hazard.
“Chelsea Football Club and Vitesse Arnhem have reached an agreement for the transfer of Marco van Ginkel. The player will join Chelsea subject to a medical, agreement of personal terms and legal documentation.” – Chelsea statement.
Based on the YouTube videos, the 20-year-old has the lot – passing, long-distance shooting, spreading the play, and tackling. Of course, anyone can be made to look good on YouTube, but Van Ginkel appears to be a special player.
Personal terms are yet to be agreed with the player, and this could pose a little problem for Chelsea. Van Ginkel has been seeking reassurances about regular first team football since he wants to feature in the 2010 World Cup with the Dutch national team.
He will be Chelsea’s second signing of the summer – taking the total spend to almost £30 million – after Andre Schurrle.
Van Ginkel scored 24 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions for Vitesse last season.
