Demba Ba may have started only six games last season, but some of his goals have proven to be season defining moments. His goals not only helped us reach the Champions League semi-final, but perhaps more importantly, it stopped Liverpool from winning their first Premier League title. For that reason alone, Ba can be given a lifetime contract.
Yet, his future has been subjected to constant speculation due to the lack of regular football. Jose Mourinho, though, seems to have decided on keeping Ba, as the striker revealed that he plans to stay at Chelsea for the new season. According to Daily Star, he said:
“Jose Mourinho has asked me to stay at Chelsea next season. He assured me that my situation wouldn’t change. I see this as my reward from God. I weighed up the pros and cons, and think that I will stay put to see what happens.
“I don’t know whether my situation will improve, but what with the coach’s offer anything can happen. I want to play a lot of matches and I think that will be the case for me.
“I was approached by Arsenal last August. But Mourinho refused to let me join them, as he said he didn’t want to help a rival team to get stronger.”
Mourinho has already confirmed that Fernando Torres will stay and that Samuel Eto’o will leave. Reserve striker Patrick Bamford, who impressed in his loan spell at Derby, has been speaking recently about becoming the third striker at Chelsea next season. The blues are set to announce Diego Costa as our major signing in the summer.
With Lukaku also returning from his loan spell, Chelsea are likely to be surplus in this regard.
However, the Belgian international could be the odd one out and could be set for a permanent move away since Mourinho has spoken little about him in the last few weeks. The pre-season matches will give the Portuguese boss a good idea of the players he would like to keep. After a very good second half to the season, Ba can be a good backup striker next season.
