Jose Mourinho states that there is still a lot of time to decide the futures of Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole. The trio are out of contract at the end of the season.
After the 0-0 draw with Norwich City, it was a particularly emotional lap of honour for these three players. They could have played at Stamford Bridge for the final time.
However, Mourinho says that it is still possible that the club may decide to extend their contracts. At 34, Lampard is the least likely to receive an extension. Even if the club decides to offer an extension, it is unlikely to be more than 12 months. Mourinho said:
“They are with the club on their future. Now it’s time to wait a little bit. The summer is a long summer for us.
“For the players involved in the World Cup it’s a different story, but for us, as a club, it’s a long time to be calm and to sit and to discuss and to analyse options and the market and possibilities.”
Mourinho stated that this season could have been even better had it not been for dropped points against teams in the bottom of the table.
“Without festivals it would have been a better season,” said the manager recalling the dropped points against Aston Villa, Sunderland, and Norwich.
The draw with Norwich has effectively ended of the Premier League title aspirations for another season. The match, in many ways, summed up the entire season. For the first time in two years, the blues will be experiencing a trophyless season.
