John Terry broke down in tears after Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final defeat against Atletico Madrid.
After missing a penalty in the 2008 Champions League final defeat against Manchester United, and being suspended for the 2012 Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich, Chelsea’s captain was desperate to lead Chelsea to victory this year.
It was widely expected that Terry would miss the match, after picking up an ankle injury in Madrid in the first-leg. Yet, in typical Terry fashion, he battled his way to fitness, and led his team out at Stamford Bridge last night.
With the score at 1-1, Terry so nearly gave Chelsea the lead when he met Willian’s free-kick with a powerful low header, but Thibaut Courtois pulled off a brilliant save to deny him.
Soon after, Diego Costa converted a penalty for Atletico, before Arda Turan sealed the tie in the 71st minute.
Terry must have known Chelsea’s fate in those last 20 minutes. After the final whistle, Terry couldn’t hold back his tears, after Chelsea were beaten in the Champions League semi-finals yet again. Heartache for Terry, after another season in which he came so close to leading Chelsea to Champions League glory.
