Belgian Coach Expects Chelsea to Sell Petr Cech

Belgian coach Marc Wilmots is of the opinion that Petr Cech will be sold in the summer and Chelsea will make Thibaut Courtois as our number one goalkeeper.

This opinion comes just days after Courtois revealed that he held talks with Jose Mourinho as early as in April, but he refused to confirm if he would be returning to Chelsea or not. “I can reveal now that I have had a big meeting with Jose Mourinho in May, before the Atletico v Barcelona game,” said Courtois. “We talked about my situation. And after this World Cup everything will be clear to everyone.”

Now, Wilmots says that Cech is likely to be sold. Speaking after the 1-0 win over Russia, he said:

“Yes, he (Courtois) will be returning to Chelsea this summer. Will they sell Cech? Yes, probably.”

Selling a top goalkeeper like Petr Cech is easier said than done. Given the longevity of goalkeepers, clubs rarely venture out to buy a top goalkeeper unless there is an immediate need like in the case of Barcelona.

Further, a player like Cech will easily cost in excess of £15 million. Only top clubs can afford this figure for a goalkeeper, and right now, not many top clubs seem to be in the need for a goalkeeper.

That said, there will be opportunities and offers. Clubs like Paris St Germain can afford to spend big on older players like Cech.

After the exit of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, and Ashley Cole in recent times, Cech and Terry are the last of the famous spine that brought so much success to Chelsea last decade.
