He may be turning 42 years of age in October, but that has not prevented Chelsea from extending goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer’s contract by another 12 months.
Schwarzer remains as the only experienced understudy to Petr Cech after the club released Henrique Hilario from his contract after eight years at the club.
A key position in the squad, Chelsea have been fortunate with several quality backup goalkeepers, like Carlo Cudicini, over the years. Even though Schwarzer is susceptible to the odd mistake, he is an excellent goalkeeper with immense experience.
“Chelsea Football Club is pleased to announce Mark Schwarzer has today (Tuesday) signed a new one-year contract,” read a statement on Chelsea’s official site.
The new deal could see Schwarzer thrust into different scenarios. He could be the third choice goalkeeper behind Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois.
Belgium coach Marc Wilmots recently suggested that Cech would be sold in the summer. This could promote Schwarzer into the second choice goalkeeper followed by the young Jamal Blackman as the third choice.
Schwarzer’s role in the team depends on the future of Cech. Last season, he made some crucial appearances with the most notable one coming in the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid. Even though the blues lost the match 3-1, Schwarzer was not to blame for the defeat.
