Chelsea have failed to bring back Tiago Mendes after our former midfielder decided to extend his contract with Atletico Madrid. He was out of contract after officially leaving Atletico on June 30.
Tiago would have been a stopgap solution for Chelsea, as Jose Mourinho attempts to reform the defensive midfield.
John obi Mikel is expected to leave before the end of this transfer window, while Chelsea are the favourites amongst bookmakers to sign Paul Pogba. The Juventus midfielder, though, looks set to stay in Italy for this summer.
Tiago did admit that he was tempted by a return to Chelsea. After being linked with a return to Chelsea, he has now decided to stay at the Vicente Calderon. He has signed a two-year deal with the Spanish champions.
Speaking to Atletico’s official site, he said: “The club offered me the chance to renew my contract. I have been offered the chance to play in various international league. I had thought it was the right time for the cycle to come to an end.”
Despite Jose Mourinho recently stating that Chelsea’s summer spending is over, the blues have been linked with a couple of names who are likely to act as squad players in the coming campaign.
So far, we have signed three – Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, and Filipe Luis – while allowing the likes of Frank Lampard, David Luiz, Samuel Eto’o, and Ashley Cole to leave.
