Chelsea were simply irresistible to watch in the latest 5-0 victory over Schalke. This victory not only guaranteed passage into the last 16 of the Champions League, but also confirms Chelsea’s status as the group winners irrespective of what happens in the final match against Sporting Lisbon.
In the process, Chelsea also matched the club’s record win away from home in the Champions League. Speaking after the match, Mourinho said:
“I don’t remember Chelsea playing this way away from home. Obviously, there have been great wins away from home with me, Roberto and other managers. But this was very impressive. Very complete.
Jose Mourinho appeared to be a man on a mission straight from his press conference ahead of the match. It appeared to transfer to the players too, as the blues took the lead inside two minutes. John Terry scored from the corner to once again remind Chelsea that he deserves a new contract. Diego Costa had several opportunities to score his first Champions League goal for Chelsea. It was only through a succession of blocks and good saves that Schalke were able to prevent the 26-year-old from scoring.
The midfielders – Hazard, William, Oscar, and Fabregas – were magical as they seemed with pass with such a high level of confidence that it was almost Barcelona like on some occasions. Didier Drogba coming on to score from the bench and Ramires also making his claim for a first-team spot with a goal were the other positives from the night.
The victory now gives Mourinho the luxury of resting some of his important players like Costa, Hazard, Oscar, and Fabregas for the final group match against Sporting at Stamford Bridge.
