It is like the case of London buses. You wait for ages for one to come and suddenly two come along. Most Chelsea fans would have been hoping for just a single goal against either Inter or against Blackburn which would have changed our season massively. We did not get one. Just as everyone were writing off Chelsea for the title race (including me) 12 come along to massively increase our goal difference and put us right back on track for the visit to Old Trafford next week.
Scoring five against an crisis club in Portsmouth is not a great feat. But to score seven against a team which is challenging for a champions League place is not mean feat. This is Aston Villa’s heaviest defeat since they lost 7-0 to Manchester United some 45 years ago. In both the matches we were simply irresistible in the second half in which we scored a combined nine goals. That is nine goals in 90 minutes of football. Outstanding.
Two players who were simply brilliant in the two matches were Frank Lampard
and a much improved Malouda. And their form seems to coincide with the fact that Ancelotti has been playing a system very close to the 4-3-3 which the players are most comfortable with. This is the formation that has got the best out of Lampard for the last 6 years. And Malouda being a traditional winger seems to enjoy it too.
And one big difference in the way we play is caused by a player who has not scored in these matches and is surrounded by constant speculation around his future.JOE COLE. I do not know if it is just me but it seems that when ever he plays on the right side in a 4-3-3 we seem to be more fluid in attack and also score goals for fun. His intelligent runs create spaces may not have brought him the rewards for him personally but for the team it has been massive.
I just hope that Roman realizes that and offers him a contract so that he stays. He is an important player, make no doubt about that.
The two thrashings against Aston Villa and Portsmouth have given the chance for Ancelotti to bring on player who I think will be a great player for us in the future. Patrick Van AanHolt. Nobody would have noticed him with all the goals going in but he seems to be promising player. Very good in the attacks and decent enough in defence he was real class. Some of the crosses he put in against Portsmouth cannot be defended. Drogba managed to miss his hat-trick from one of those.
So all is well upto now. The players just need to keep their concentration and focus and beat Manchester United next week. The title is still in our hands.
