It is a well known fact that Chelsea have an ageing team. So you would have thought that this summer represents a good opportunity to buy some good young players, thereby bringing the average age down. But it seems Chelsea’s fascination for older players will not disappear, particularly when you look at the new potential targets, Yossi Benayoun and Srna. Both are 30 and 28 respectively. Both will cost a combined £20 million and I for one cannot see one single reason to buy them.
Or maybe, do I? Benayoun is a poor man’s Joe Cole. He can open up defences when things are tight and he doesn’t cost much. £5 million is the
kind of figure being quoted around in the papers and for that price he can be good worth given that he still has around 4 years left in him.
Srna is a Croatian full-back who can play either as a right back or as wing back. But just look at how much quality right back’s Chelsea have at the moment. Right from the best right back in England, Ivanovic to Bosingwa and Ferreira, Chelsea have a plethora of right backs. You really wonder if he is going to start ahead of all these players or sit in the bench, just picking up the wages. He is not exactly what you call cheap at a quoted £14 million.
Both are very good players, but after Chelsea’s double winning season, is this the kind of signings that Chelsea fans want to see? I am not sure.
Would you like to see these players coming to Stamford Bridge instead of an Aguero or Torres?
Benayoun is versatile and I think he knows he’ll be used as an impact player.
As for Srna, I always thought he was more of a midfielder than a defender…
@Kris, I don’t think that Benayoun is going to start ahead of Kalou.
As for Srna, I think that he is going to replace Bosingwa.
