Finally the wait for the most watched tournament in the world is over. The World Cup even though is only 5 matches and 2 days old, it has already become exciting. There have some fantastic individual displays from the likes of Messi and great team displays from the likes of South Africa. But for some, the start could have been better. And that some includes the Chelsea contingent playing for the France and England. And while the French did not really know what to do, England failed to press their authority on the match and turn chances into goals.
Malouda was left out of the starting line-up after reportedly falling out with manager, Domenech and as a result, Anelka was the only Chelsea player starting the World Cup on the opening day. The match at times reminded France’s boring group game against Romania in Euro 2008, as they failed to take advantage of playing against 10 men. But given that South Africa and Mexico
drew with each other, all is not lost for France and they will be hoping for a better performance next time around when they take on Mexico.
England on the other hand featuring the entire Chelsea contingent except Joe Cole were dominating most of the match. But poor finishing coupled with a horrendous mistake from West Ham United goalkeeper, Robert Green meant that they could only draw with United States. Though England played better, that isn’t the case for the Chelsea players. Terry was alright, Ashley Cole was not exceptional and Lampard playing a holding role did not influence the game as he usually does. England’s next match is against Algeria.
Serbia takes on Ghana in their first match today which should feature Ivanovic. He can become the first Chelsea player to register a win at the World Cup 2010 against an Ghana side without Essien.
