The League Cup has always been regarded by big clubs as a competition for youngsters. It seems that Roberto Di Matteo will not be changing that policy for the match against Wolves in the third round of the Capital One Cup at Stamford Bridge.
It has been a busy schedule for Chelsea since the return of domestic football after having played three games in a week. The likes of Fernando Torres and Eden Hazard, who have started every game for Chelsea, will get some much needed rest, as the Italian flexes his muscle and use the strength of the squad.
Unlike Arsene Wenger, Di Matteo will not be placing his faith entirely on youngsters. He has suggested that there will be a mix of senior players and youngsters.
The likes of Marko Marin, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Victor Moses could make their full debuts for the club. Due to the absence of Daniel Sturridge, Moses could be selected to play as the striker.
Lucas Piazon is also someone to watch out for in this match. The young Brazilian is yet to make his debut for the club. However, he did well in the reserves last season and in the pre-season.
Di Matteo on the match:
“I’m sure there will be one or two that haven’t had much time on the pitch who will be playing.
“We’ll mix it up. There are a few players who have played one or two games before that deserve a chance and there will be some senior players too.”
On Victor Moses:
“He’s still young, but he will improve and develop, he’s an exciting player.
I tried very hard to sign him, not just this year but previously as well, so he’s a player I like very much and he will have a big influence on our season.”
Possible team line-ups:
Chelsea (4-2-3-1): Turnbull, Azpilicueta, Cahill, Ivanovic, Bertrand, Romeu, Mikel, Marin, Oscar, Piazon, Moses
Prediction: Chelsea to win 3-0
Kick-off: Stamford Bridge, 19:45 (BST)
