Real Madrid have cleared the way for José Mourinho to join Chelsea in the summer after confirming that the Portuguese manager will leave the club at the end of the season. Mourinho has been linked with a return to Chelsea for quite a while. He has also been hinting about a possible return for a second spell.
However, the deal to bring the 50-year-old back to Stamford Bridge did not appear done and dusted because of the rumoured £15 million release clause in his contract. Abramovich need not pay this amount now, as Madrid and Mourinho have parted ways in an amicable fashion.
“After the talks with our coach Jose Mourinho we have reached the agreement to end the contractual relationship at the end of this season. On behalf of the directors, I would like to thank Jose Mourinho for his hard work over the last three years.” – Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
Rafa Benitez has left Chelsea in the best possible shape for Mourinho to come back and recreate his magic.
