Chelsea fans can breathe a sigh of relief after Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that the club is not looking to sign flamboyant defender David Luiz in this transfer window. David Luiz transfer rumours started just a few months after his £21 million move from Benfica. Barcelona are a huge fan of the Brazilian, who has his own style.
Barcelona and Bayern Munich – after the arrival of Guardiola – have been linked with a £40 million bid for the player. This would represent a huge profit for Chelsea. However, Guardiola’s latest statements have confirmed that Luiz will not be heading to the Allianz Arena.
“He’s [David Luiz] not coming to Munich. We’ve got four or five central defenders. There is no truth to the speculation.” – Guardiola.
After Mourinho’s arrival became official, Luiz has been strongly linked with a move away from the club. Luiz has a great set of qualities that make him endearing to the fans, but he is not the ‘Mourinho’ type defender.
Mourinho has always preferred someone rocksolid like a Ricardo Carvalho or John Terry. Luiz, though, makes numerous mistakes that may not endear to Mourinho. Some of the recent statements by Mourinho, though, have indicated that though he may not be a fan of Luiz, but he is willing to work with the 26-year-old to make him a better defender.
“I like central defenders to be able to play.
“You’re free to dribble from the back when you have the right conditions. You have to measure the risk.
“For David Luiz, that is the important thing — to make the right decision.
“But when a player is different and has more potential than others, he has to use his talent in a good way.” – Mourinho.
The threat from Bayern Munich may have gone away, but the prying eyes of Barcelona still remains. After their failure to capture Thiago Silva, Barcelona could well turn their attention towards Luiz. New Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has stated that the club needs a new central defender.
Would you keep Luiz or take the £40 million?
