It was a night of yet another penalty shootout disappointment for Mourinho and Chelsea, as Bayern Munich lifted the UEFA Super Cup by winning the match at 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
Jose Mourinho enjoyed success by adopting a counter attacking football against Guardiola’s teams and the Super Cup match was no different. Chelsea were prepared to sit on the edge of their penalty box when they didn’t have the ball. They launched counter attacks using the pace of Hazard and Andre Schurrle on the wings. It was through a fast counter that Chelsea opened the scoring.
First half:
Hazard did extremely well to hold on to the ball amidst challenge from several players. His well-weighted ball found Schurrle, whose pull back was converted with aplomb by an oncoming Fernando Torres. It took just 13 seconds for Chelsea to convert defence into a goal! Talk about breath-taking counters!
Bayern enjoyed a lot of possession, but they could only half chances for most of the first half. Their best chance of the match came in the 21st min. Ribery’s shot that almost went in but for a brilliant save from Cech. Chelsea were disciplined in defence, focussed at pressing, and threatening on the counter; a well-deserved first half lead.
Second half:
The second half started in the worst possible manner with a goal in the 48th min through Franck Ribery. It was a great shot, but perhaps Chelsea could’ve done better with Cahill and Cech at fault slightly.
The introduction of Javi Martinez gave the Bavarians a lot of strength. It minimised the impact of Oscar, who should have scored when presented with just the goalkeeper to beat. Chelsea had numerous chances including headers from Ivanovic and Luiz, but the crossbar came to Bayern’s rescue.
Most of the Bayern players, though, were keen on going to the ground. It was not surprising that a Chelsea player was eventually sent off. It was Ramires for his second booking 5 mins from time. Second half was more even, but both teams were unable to take their chances.
The game went into extra time just as it did in the Champions League final 2012.
Extra time:
A number of tired legs marked the start of extra time. Players like Eden Hazard have the ability to create something out of nothing and he proved that once again. He just managed to stay onside on the wings to receive a pass from David Luiz. He then skipped past two players to hit a powerful shot past Neuer, who was slightly at fault.
It gave 10-man Chelsea a lead to protect and they did. Chelsea managed to defend defiantly as Mourinho brought on Lukaku for Torres.
Cech made two outstanding saves in the space of minute to keep Mandzukic and Martinez out. He made 5 breathtaking saves to keep Bayern out. It was literally nail biting stuff. Neuer was playing almost at the half way line as the ball kept coming back.
However, Chelsea’s 10 men were unable to hold on as Martinez equalized from close range with seconds remaining. The game went into a penalty shootout.
After nine scorers, Lukaku’s penalty miss gave Bayern a 5-4 win on penalties.
