Thibaut Courtois joined Chelsea with a reputation of being the best young goalkeeper in the world. He has lived up to this expectation at Atletico Madrid to the last two years, but his Chelsea future still remains in doubt due to their impressive form of Petr Cech. Courtois will find it difficult to replace Cech and he continues to be linked with other clubs including Barcelona. He still has more than two years left on his Chelsea contract, and this summer could prove to be a decisive one.
Chelsea are expected to hold talks with the 21-year-old in order to decide if he plays for Chelsea or if selling him is a better option for the sake of his career. Courtois has given a deadline of until March to decide his future. According to ESPN, he said:
“About my future, I cannot wait much longer.
“I need to make a decision with Chelsea as soon as possible, in March, but at the moment I do not really want to talk because there are so many games and you must be focused.”
According to Superbetting.com, Atletico Madrid are 11/2 to win the title in Spain. After 18 matches of the season, they are still with Barcelona on 49 points. They have the tightest defence amongst all teams with just 11 goals conceded. Courtois undoubtedly has had a huge role to play in this record.
However, replacing Cech will be extremely difficult unless the Czech Republic stopper decides to go bonkers. Cech has been at fault for a couple of goals this season, but not to an extent where his Chelsea future will be in doubt.
There is little to separate Cech and Courtois (apart from age), and Chelsea will be having a huge task on their hands this summer.
