Chelsea 1-3 Atletico Madrid
Chelsea have been knocked out of the Champions League after a 3-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.
Chelsea looked to be in a good position after old Atletico favourite, Fernando Torres, gave them the lead on 36 minutes.
Chelsea were hit with a sucker-punch just on the stroke of half-time however, when Atletico’s Adrian equalised. This changed the whole complexion of the game.
Thibaut Courtois pulled off a great save to keep out a John Terry header just after half-time. But, after 60 minutes, Samuel Eto’o brought down Diego Costa in the box for a penalty. Diego Costa smashed home the resulting penalty.
A few minutes later David Luiz saw his header hit the post, before Courtois tipped the ball over the bar. On 72 minutes, Atletico wrapped the tie up when Turan slotted home after his initial header came off the bar.
Chelsea pushed forward but couldn’t find the goals they needed.
A fantastic effort by Chelsea, who represented England tremendously. Atletico just had that bit extra over the two legs, and they will meet their city rivals, Real Madrid, in the final in Lisbon on May 24th.
