If reports are to be believed, Diego Costa is on his way to Stamford Bridge. The Spanish national, who was born in Brazil, could well be the missing piece in Jose Mourinho’s jigsaw puzzle. Regardless of what else Jose does in the summer transfer window, Diego Costa is likely to be his most significant signing this summer.
Mourinho has spoken all season of Chelsea’s lack of a world class centre forward. He has certainly put little faith in Demba Ba, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres, perhaps understandably. Furthermore, despite Romelu Lukaku’s brilliant season for Everton, Mourinho seems reluctant to give the Belgian any real chance of proving his worth to Chelsea. Indeed, Lukaku could be used as part of an exchange deal to bring Diego Costa to west London.
After a couple of seasons of solid performances for Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, Diego Costa’s talent really began to emerge last season, when he partnered Radamel Falcao in Atletico Madrid’s attack. Liverpool were interested, and apparently offered to triple his wages, to which he refused.
This season, Diego Costa has improved further, his outstanding ability showcased for everybody to see. His performances this season have been amongst the very best in world football. In 46 games for Atletico this season, he has scored 36 goals.
Diego Costa has all the attributes of the perfect modern day centre-forward. He is quick, agile, has exceptional movement off the ball, and he is clinical in front of goal. He is deceptively strong, holding off defenders with ease, whilst also being great in the air.
Diego Costa can bring to Chelsea what they have missed all season, namely a reliable and consistent centre-forward. He rarely has a bad game, and few strikers have his instinct in front of goal.
If there is one caution to Diego Costa it is that he has a fiery temperament. Still, maybe this is exactly what Chelsea lacked this season. When his aggression is channelled correctly and controlled, it seems to be exactly what gives him the edge. He thrives on being confrontational.
The prospect of Chelsea’s youthful attack in tandem with Diego Costa is something sure to whet the appetite of all Blues fans. Diego Costa could well be the player to take Chelsea to the next level.
