Can Chelsea win the Champions League?

Although the Blues haven’t enjoyed the best of starts to the new Premier League season, Chelsea supporters are right to be positive about their chances of winning Europe’s elite club competition this term. Jose Mourinho’s men have been handed the perfect group stage draw and are leading candidates to progress to the last-16 stage as group winners despite their domestic struggles.

Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in Europe.  The Chelsea jersey is a top seller on many stores. The Blues have reached the latter stages of the Champions League on a regular basis since Roman Abramovich bought the club back in June 2003. The Russian has always been a fan of the continent’s primary club competition and it wouldn’t be foolish to suggest that he actually ranks the Champions League higher than the domestic title on his list of priorities.

This season, Mourinho may be tempted to focus the majority of his efforts on winning the Champions League, particularly after their poor start to the domestic campaign. Chelsea are already 11 points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City and the defending champions may opt to push for a second Champions League crown this season. The Blues last won the competition back in the 2011-12 campaign after they emerged victorious against Bayern Munich in a penalty shootout.

The Blues had an excellent chance of progressing far in the competition last season but a rare error of judgement from Mourinho cost his side dearly as they crashed out of the tournament. Chelsea were one goal up against ten-man Paris Saint-Germain but instead of attempting to exploit their tired defence and grab another goal, Mourinho tried to ‘park the bus’ and sit on the lead. That criticism, however, was limited whereas now the Portuguese is under severe pressure and, according to bookies, is one of the leading contenders facing the sack.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, that didn’t work and they crashed out in front of their home fans despite dominating the match. It was a huge kick in the teeth for Chelsea and Mourinho, who usually gets decisions like that spot on, was clearly livid with his own choices in the immediate aftermath of the game. The Blues will be eager to make up for last season’s failure and will be aiming for at least a spot in the semi-finals this term. Bookies can keep you updated on all of the latest Champions League odds, news and information throughout the course of the campaign.

However, Chelsea are capable of winning the competition and they should be targeting another victory in Europe’s famous tournament. On their day, the Blues can beat anybody and, with a bit of luck, could go on to lift the Champions League trophy at the end of the season. With Eden Hazard, John Terry and Jose Mourinho all at their best, Chelsea will stand a great chance but they cannot afford any passengers.
