Chelsea came in for a lot of criticism after losing in the EFL Cup final, and so has Mauricio Pochettino. According to Sami Mokbel and Kieran Gill of the Daily Mail, the Chelsea board are considering managerial replacements.
Many felt Pochettino wasted an opportunity to win a trophy as Liverpool weren’t at full-strength. The Reds were without Allison, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah.
Losing out on Europe is costly for Chelsea
Chelsea were coming off the back of a draw at Manchester City and were unchanged for Sunday’s final. But they let themselves down at Wembley, and Pochettino’s job may be at risk as a result.
Chelsea have all but missed out on sealing European football through their league position, so the EFL Cup saved them. Had they beaten Liverpool, the Blues would have been in the Europa League next season.
Todd Boehly has spent over £1bn on new signings since taking over, so he needs European football to make revenue. Chelsea could land themselves a lucrative broadcasting deal if they had Europa League fixtures at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea considering replacements for Pochettino
Pochettino was appointed Chelsea manager in May, so he’s not even had one full season in charge. The 51-year-old was tasked with fixing the problems of last season, but the board didn’t expect another struggle. Chelsea finished 12th in the table with 44 points. They’re currently 11th with 35 points after 25 games.
The Blues have reportedly started looking at successors to Pochettino, with Ruben Amorim one of many on their wish list. Chelsea might have a problem attracting an elite coach due to their current situation, however. They won’t have European football to boast, so players and managers might go for other clubs instead.
Pochettino is in favour after getting Chelsea to the EFL Cup final while improving results, but it’s not a free pass. He needs to prove the Blues are going in the right direction under his leadership.
