Cole Palmer impressed as Chelsea came out on top in Monday’s five-goal thriller against Newcastle United.
The 21-year-old is having a fantastic season and had a hand in two goals on the night.
Chelsea got off to a dream start
Chelsea opened the scoring just minutes into the game through Nicolas Jackson. Malo Gusto whipped in a cross that wasn’t properly dealt with, falling to the feet of Palmer. He hit a low shot that Jackson deflected past Martin Dubravka to give the Blues an early lead.
Chelsea would have hoped to take a lead into the break, but Alexander Isak equalised for Newcastle before half-time. Trevoh Chalobah lost the ball in the middle of the park and Bruno Guimaraes found Isak on the run. He finished brilliantly from the edge of the box to level the game up.
Palmer did get his goal before the hour mark, giving Chelsea the lead for the second time. Enzo Fernandez picked out the England international on the edge of the box and he drilled an effort past Dubravka.
Chelsea looked efficient in attack
The Blues should have doubled their advantage through Raheem Sterling, but his effort was blocked on the line. In the 76th minute, Chelsea finally got their third goal of the game, with Conor Gallagher setting up Mykhailo Mudryk.
Nicolas Jackson led a Chelsea breakaway on the left and fed Gallagher who teed the ball for Mudryk to gather. He ran through the defence and rounded the goalkeeper to score.
Newcastle still had some fight left in them and halved the deficit late on through Jacob Murphy. Lewis Miley picked out Murphy on the spin and he fired into the roof of the net from distance.
Chelsea held on for the win, however, moving one point behind 10th-placed Newcastle in the table. The Blues could overtake the Magpies if they win their game in hand. Chelsea next face Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday, March 17.
