Cole Palmer has had an outstanding debut season at Chelsea, but Mauricio Pochettino is looking for another attacking-midfielder. And while Christopher Nkunku provides depth in the same position, his injury history suggests Chelsea might need another option.
According to Simon Jones of Mail Online, Chelsea are interested in Georgiy Sudakov and may have stiff competition for his signature. Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are among the clubs interested in the 21-year-old, so Chelsea have their work cut out bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
Who is Sudakov?
The Ukraine international rose through the youth ranks to Shakhtar Donetsk’s first-team in 2021, contributing 38 goals in 101 games. Sudakov is a talented attacking-midfielder who scores and creates goals almost every other game, and he’s only 21 years of age.
He’s represented his country on 14 occasions and looks to have a bright future. Sudakov scored 10 goals and made six assists from 34 games last season, catching the attention of various clubs. Shakhtar are the Ukraine Premier League holders and could reclaim the title this season, so Sudakov may not jump at a departure.
Palmer has scored 26 goals with 15 assists in 47 games for Chelsea this season, so his place wouldn’t be in jeopardy. Nkunku has scored three goals in 437 minutes of Premier League football, so he’s also delivered despite various injuries. Sudakov looks a talented player, but it remains to be seen why he’s a priority give Chelsea have options.
How much will Sudakov cost?
Reports say Chelsea have had talks with Sudakov’s representatives over a deal and a big-money move is expected.
The 21-year-old is rated at £65m, so he won’t come cheap. Chelsea have the resources to sign Sudakov, but they’re trying to curb the overspending to stay in line with Premier League financial regulations.
Sudakov would improve the squad, but is he a priority signing when Palmer and Nkunku already operate in his preferred position?
