Chelsea got their revenge on Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, August 25, thrashing them 6-2 at Molineux. Noni Madueke bagged a rare hat-trick as the Blues ended their three-game losing streak to the Old Gold.
Nicolas Jackson had two goal involvements while Cole Palmer boasted three assists so it was a great afternoon. Joao Felix scored too after returning to Chelsea from Atletico Madrid.
Wolves fought hard in first half
Chelsea got off to a perfect start against Wolves, scoring in the 2nd minute through Nicolas Jackson. The 23-year-old, who netted 14 league goals last season, headed home Palmer’s corner to give Chelsea the lead.
Wolves eventually responded before the half-hour mark through Matheus Cunha. Rayan Aït-Nouri ran went on a mazy run through the middle and found Cunha unmarked in the area. The 25-year-old made no mistake with his first-time effort, wrong-footing Robert Sanchez for 1-1.
Chelsea re-took the lead before half-time, with Palmer turning goalscorer and Jackson returning the favour. Jackson found Palmer during a Chelsea counter attack, and he lobbed Jose Sa from distance for 2-1.
Wolves were determined to go into the break level, however, and scored a goal through Jørgen Strand Larsen. After a set piece was headed back across the goal, Larsen reacted fasted to steer the ball beyond Sanchez.
No answer to Madueke magic
Just minutes after the restart, Chelsea took the lead once more through a deflected Madueke effort. Nine minutes later, the 22-year-old bagged his second of the game. Palmer slipped him the ball on the right flank and Madueke fired an effort through Sa’s legs. And just five minutes after his second, Madueke celebrated a hat-trick. Palmer once again found Madueke on the right, and the winger slotted an effort in at the near post.
Felix wrapped up the scoring late on, and it was former Wolves star Pedro Neto who assisted him. Palmer picked out Neto on the run, and he pulled the ball back for Felix who thundered an effort home.
Chelsea are now 8th in the Premier League with three points after two games. Wolves are 19th without a point after consecutive defeats at the start of the season.
