08/10/24 (UWCL) Chelsea 3-2 Real Madrid
Chelsea enjoyed victory in their opening Champions League outing to Real Madrid, coming out on top in a five-goal thriller. It’s the third consecutive year Chelsea and Real have come together in Europe, with the Blues enjoying two wins and a draw. With the Chelsea F.C. Women standings continuing to reflect their strong form, this victory reinforced their position as one of the top teams in both domestic and European football.
Las Blancas were eliminated from the group stage in last year’s competition and didn’t make it past the quarter-finals the previous campaign, so Chelsea were favourites to pick up all three points.
They got off to a perfect start too, taking the lead inside of two minutes through Sjoeke Nusken. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd ran down the right flank with the ball after a failed corner kick routine, whipping in a cross that Nusken headed home via a Real defender.

Guro Reiten scored the pick of the bunch after a free-flowing move saw Chelsea’s passing cut Palace to ribbons.
Chelsea’s fourth goal came from brilliant pass-and-move football, but their fifth was from a simple dead ball situation. Nathalie Björn was poorly marked from a corner and side-footed home from close range.
Reiten scored Chelsea’s sixth in injury time after fantastic work from Sandy Baltimore who jinked past two players and nutmegged a third.
Catarina Macario wrapped up the scoring at the death, tapping in a rebounded effort from Ramirez. Chelsea dominated the game and looked like scoring every time they went forward.
20/09/24 (WSL) Chelsea 1–0 Aston Villa
Chelsea got their WSL title defence off to a perfect start with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa.
Kaneryd struck in the 36th minute with a curled effort beyond Sabrina D’Angelo.
She produced a piece of individual brilliance to send her marker the wrong way and buy her time to pick out the corner.
Emma Hayes leaving Chelsea Women after 12 years to become USWNT head coach over the summer had supporters fearing the worst.
Chelsea had won their fifth consecutive Women’s Super League title and were at risk of losing their dominance without the long-serving manager.
Sonia Bompastor was coming off the back of consecutive Ligue 1 titles and a Champions League win with Olympique Lyonnais, so she looked a great replacement on paper.
She couldn’t have gotten off to a better start at Chelsea too, with a 100% record in pre-season and 100% record from their first six games of the campaign.
Things look bright with Chelsea this season and supporters have Sonia to thank.
