Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has admitted he was devastated to lose out on a place in the Champions League final last night.
Atletico Madrid won 3-1 at Stamford Bridge, to create an all Madrid affair in next month’s final at Lisbon.
Fernando Torres had given Chelsea the lead, however the La Liga visitors turned it around, to inflict a fourth consecutive Champions League semi-final exit for Jose Mourinho.
Cahill spoke after the game and his disappointment was evident.
“We’re heartbroken,” Cahill claimed. “One game to the final and we couldn’t quite manage it – we’re devastated.
“We started off really well but they got back into the game. We tried to create, the effort was there, but we just fell short. They’re a good side. They caused us a few problems and their keeper produced a fantastic game.
“We have to be over it by the weekend. At the moment it’s raw and it will take some getting over but we’ll see what happens in the next few days.”
The exit means Chelsea look set to end the season without a trophy, with the Blues third favourites in the Premier League title race.
Chelsea will look to recover from their semi-final loss when they host relegation threatened Norwich City on Sunday.
We still have it in us. Mourinho does a very good job. We just messed up a little bit in last night’s game. Let’s all forget about it and focus on our remaining games in the Barclays Premier League. Who knows? We might be lucky enough to win the league 🙂
