Chelsea enjoyed a 2-0 win over their London rivals Tottenham with a dominant performance at Stamford Bridge. Goals of Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson put Spurs to the sword, sealing an important three points for Chelsea that could have huge ramifications in the race for Europe.
Chelsea could have scored more than two goals after delivering a superb first-half showing. Tottenham had little answer to Chelsea’s dominance and barely landed any blows of their own. Spurs weren’t in great shape ahead of the clash and are now in a real rut after another defeat.
Chelsea dominated the first-half
Nicolas Jackson nearly put Chelsea ahead after being put through on goal by Mykhaylo Mudryk, but his effort was cleared off the line. Noni Madueke then had an opportunity after cutting inside on his left foot, but he fired over the bar.
Chelsea did eventually break the deadlock in the 24th minute through Chalobah. He headed home a Conor Gallagher freekick to give Chelsea the lead that they deserved. Mudryk came inches away from doubling their advantage, curling an effort wide of the far post after a speedy counter-attack.
Tottenham had an effort of their own, heading just wide from a set piece, but Chelsea went into the break with a slim lead.
Tottenham’s top-four hopes in tatters
Chelsea grabbed their second goal in the 72nd minute through Jackson. Cole Palmer struck the woodwork with a brilliant freekick and Jackson headed home the rebound.
The Blues took all three points and picked up an impressive win, damaging Spurs’ top-four hopes at the same time. Chelsea have won two consecutive games without conceding while Tottenham have lost three on the bounce.
Heung-min Son failed to register a shot all game. Richarlison had only one chance before being substituted. Dejan Kulusevski also had just one shot all game, but none of them found the target with their efforts – Brennan Johnson and James Maddison too.
