Conor Gallagher has an uncertain future at Chelsea as his contract is up next year without an extension in sight. The 24-year-old signed a five-year deal in 2020 and could depart Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2025.
Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian says Chelsea are desperate to keep Gallagher but contract talks have stalled. The England international joined the Blues at the age of 6 and rose through the youth ranks.
Gallagher has made 38 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals with seven assists. The 24-year-old has missed only one game across the board, amassing 2996 playing minutes from a possible 3420.
Tottenham trying to lure him to North London
Gallagher loves Chelsea and is living out his dream as club captain, but the contract situation is worrying. Chelsea risk of losing him for nothing if he doesn’t put pen to paper on an extension.
The Blues’ struggles in the last two seasons may have taken their toll on Gallagher. They look set for another campaign of mediocrity, albeit reaching a cup final, so that may be a factor.
Tottenham have long been interested in Gallagher and hope to hijack the situation. They’re chasing a Champions League place this season and are a much more attractive proposition for the central midfielder. It’s just whether Gallagher could join a rival club.
Why won’t Gallagher sign a new deal at Chelsea?
Gallagher currently earns £50k-per-week at Chelsea, which is a low figure for a first-team player of a big club. He’s been wanting to triple that number if he’s to sign an extension, but Chelsea haven’t granted his request.
The Blues signed Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023 and handed him a £150k-per-week deal. Sean Walsh and Ben Jacobs of 90min said in February that Gallagher wants his contract to reflect that of his peers. Given he skippers Chelsea and plays the same amount of games, it’s a far request. But Chelsea aren’t budging and may have to sell up before his value plummets.
