Exciting news for Chelsea fans as the club prepares to launch an improved offer of over £70 million for Moises Caicedo. The 21-year-old midfielder has already agreed to personal terms with Stamford Bridge and is hopeful that this new bid will persuade Brighton to accept his dream move.
Chelsea had a previous £60 million bid rejected for Caicedo, their top midfield target. There are concerns that Brighton might dismiss this improved offer, as they had previously turned down a similar amount from Arsenal during the January transfer window. Brighton is holding out for a fee of £100 million, using the benchmark of the £105 million Arsenal paid for Declan Rice from West Ham.
Caicedo recently expressed his desire to join Chelsea, stating in an interview with Ecuadorian outlet TC Television, “It’s a big team, that’s true. A very historic team which I can’t say no to joining because it’s a very big, historic, beautiful team. The city as well is beautiful. It’s got everything beautiful.”
Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart, have been in regular contact with Brighton officials in recent weeks and have been providing updates to new manager Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino has confirmed his intention to “finish the squad” before the pre-season tour of the United States, as he feels the team lacks midfield talent following Chelsea’s recent player sales.
With the departures of N’Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Chelsea has raised over £230 million by selling 11 players. This exodus of talent could create space for a second midfielder to join the team. Chelsea is also considering bids for Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga and Southampton’s Romeo Lavia later in the transfer window.
Pochettino is also open to signing an additional striker, and Winstanley and Stewart have been exploring the market for options. However, they will first give opportunities to new signings Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, along with Armando Broja, who has returned from a serious knee injury suffered in December, during the pre-season.
In a season without European football, Chelsea will face warm-up matches against Wrexham, Brighton, Fulham, Newcastle, and Borussia Dortmund to determine if a fourth striking option is needed.
On another note, Romelu Lukaku will not be joining Chelsea’s traveling squad and is expected to return to Cobham on Tuesday. Negotiations with Juventus led to Inter Milan walking away from talks in frustration over the weekend. While Inter had received private and public encouragement from Lukaku about his desire to stay at San Siro, Juventus is now the favorite in the race, having made a favorable offer of £32 million plus £2 million in add-ons for Lukaku. However, this deal is dependent on the potential sale of striker Dusan Vlahovic.
Al-Hilal remains in the race for Lukaku as well, but the Belgian international reportedly prefers a return to Italy despite a lucrative salary offer from Saudi Arabia.
