Chelsea have been constantly linked with a move for Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy. The 26-year-old England international would have cost the club in the region of £10 million. Instead, the club has now secured former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer. The Australian has signed a one-year contract with the club, and it is a great move in my opinion.
The 40-year-old has been a regular first-team player in British football since 1997. The wealth of experience and quality that he offers should come in handy if Petr Cech gets injured over the course of the season.
“It’s a phenomenal club — one of the biggest and best clubs in the world. It’s an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn’t take much convincing to come here,” said Schwarzer.
He has played more than 400 matches in England, while also lifting trophies like the League Cup as well.
“I know that Petr is No.1. That goes without saying. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper,” he added.
Chelsea made two bids for Ruddy, but Schwarzer would be a great signing due to several reasons. He is unlikely to complain if there is lack of first-team football. He has only one year left on his deal, which would help Thibaut Courtois to compete against Cech from next season onwards. The Belgian is set for a third straight loan spell with Atletico Madrid, but he is likely to return to Chelsea after this year.
He is also extremely reliable and rarely makes mistakes.
