Pre-season games are generally not about winning, but it is a real bonus when you see the team score four goals. The good news keeps on getting better after Eden Hazard and Marko Marin scored in the debut matches. The 4-2 victory over Seattle Sounders may not be the best pre-season game ever, but it will instil a lot of fear within Premier league defenders, who saw the best of Eden Hazard.
The 21-year-old may have scored only with the help of a deflection, but he was influential throughout the match.
A few high-profile players like Fernando Torres and John Terry were missing from the squad. This meant that Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo handed out opportunities to the likes of Hutchinson, Chalobah, and Piazon.
Romelu Lukaku showed why he should not be sent out on loan to Fulham. The 19-year-old striker was at his best; he scored two goals in the match while also demonstrating his pace, power, and skill. He could emerge as a real contender for the starting line-up this season based on this display.
“Hazard can have a real impact in the Premier League. He has great ability and quality and we’re seeing that every day in training. I’m really pleased with tonight’s game. We’ve got everything we were looking for from it. It was a good workout with good energy, we’ve integrated some new players and we’ve also seen some of the young talent that will be the future of this club.”
said the manager Roberto di Matteo after the match.
Chelsea will be playing three matches in the United States, as part of the pre-season tour 2012. Our next game will be against Paris St Germain on July 22. We have faced Ancelotti in pre-season tours on numerous occasions and that tradition is set to continue on Sunday as well. You can catch all the live action and the highlights of all the 2012 pre–season matches at Chelsea TV.
