According to Miguel Angel de Miguel Casas of Fichajes, Chelsea have a ‘strong desire’ to sign Mohammed Kudus.
The 23-year-old has impressed at West Ham United but could seek a summer departure due to their Premier League woes.
How good is the Chelsea target?
Kudus joined United from Ajax in August and has made 31 appearances, scoring 13 goals with three assists. The Ghanaian international boasts 11 goals and three assists from 32 games for his country, so he’s the real deal.
It’s easy to see why Chelsea would be keen, but Mauricio Pochettino isn’t exactly short of attacking options. He can call upon Raheem Sterling, Noni Madueke and Mykhailo Mudryk, but the trio haven’t been prolific as Kudus.
Sterling has eight goals and eight assists this season, but Madueke (4 goals, 1 assist) and Mudryk (4 goals, 3 assists) have fallen short. Kudus would be an improvement and might be available at the end of the campaign.
Why would West Ham let Kudus leave?
West Ham are currently 10th in the league but are winless in their last six games. They’re ahead of Chelsea in the table but are deemed to have a lower ceiling than the Blues. Chelsea have greater resources too, so Kudus could land himself a substantial pay rise.
United paid £38m for Kudus and would want a lot more money back given his fine form. CIES Football value the attacking-midfielder at £68.5m, nearly double what West Ham spent just months ago.
But whether Chelsea consider the Ghanaian international a priority remains to be seen, as they do have other options. Sterling, Madueke, Mudryk and Christopher Nkunku aren’t going anywhere, so the Blues might have to sell to buy.
Chelsea loaned Armando Broja to Fulham in January too, so another striker should top their wishlist rather than a winger. West Ham will want to resist offers for their key players, but Chelsea wanted Kudus before he went to East London.
