Chelsea travel to Wembley to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup final on Sunday afternoon. It’s the third time in only two years that this Premier League duo have met in a domestic cup final. Chelsea played Liverpool in the 2022 EFL Cup final and 2022 FA Cup final, losing both times.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are underdogs ahead of this weekend’s clash too as they’ve struggled for consistency. They’ve also lost their last six domestic cup finals. Liverpool are chasing the title and have been nearly flawless in 2024, so they’re favourites to get a result.
Chelsea too unpredictable
Chelsea beat AFC Wimbledon, Brighton & Hove Albion, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough to reach the final. Their journey to Wembley didn’t come without a scare, however, with a shock defeat in the semi-final first leg.
Chelsea lost away from home to Middlesbrough before thrashing them at home, so they’re hard to predict. They’ve been in good form leading up to the final, winning two and drawing one of their last three games. Pochettino’s men have beaten Aston Villa and Crystal Palace while drawing at Manchester City, so they have improved recently.
Chelsea have taken points off Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham, so they shouldn’t be underestimated. That being said, the Blues sit 11th in the table with 10 defeats from 25 outings. Liverpool are no slouches either and look unbeatable since the turn of the year, so this won’t be easy.
Liverpool a hard team to keep quiet
Liverpool are top of the table, 10 places and 25 points better off than Chelsea. The Reds have lost only two domestic games this entire season, which is the same amount as Chelsea in 2024. Jurgen Klopp’s men have nine wins and one draw from 11 games this year, so the final is theirs to lose.
Liverpool boast three or more goals in seven games this year, so Chelsea have a tough task shutting them out. Liverpool have won their last two domestic finals, so they tend to deliver in the big games. Nevertheless, Chelsea have exceeded expectations making it this far, so they won’t want that going to waste.
