Chelsea have conceded an astonishing nine goals in the last five matches, which is a figure normally not associated with teams managed by Jose Mourinho. Incredible defensive organisation formed the basis for the two league titles in Mourinho’s first spell. This poor run of form continued in the 2-1 defeat against Sunderland in the Capital One cup. Table leaders Arsenal are the next opponents and it gives an opportunity for optimistic Chelsea fans to think about going top of the table.
On the other hand, Chelsea could once again fall five points behind the gunners if we lost at the Emirates. Speaking after the Sunderland match, Mourinho hinted that he may employ defensive tactics especially for the Arsenal match and those that follow. According to the Guardian, he said:
“It’s something I don’t want to do, to play more counterattacking, but I’m giving it serious thought. If I want to win 1-0 I think I can as I think it is one of the easiest things in football.
“It is not so difficult, as you don’t give players the chance to express themselves.”
The club’s last clean sheet in the league was against West Ham in November, but Chelsea are still 7/2 to win the title according to popular bookmakers. City are currently the favourites amongst bookmakers for the title. We have some important matches – against Arsenal and Liverpool – in the next five. It is imperative that the players find the defensive form, which is every bit crucial towards winning the title. Chelsea have already conceded more goals than they did during Mourinho’s first title winning season at the club.
Mourinho also acknowledged that the defensive frailties are not responsible for the recent poor run of form. He continued:
“We’ve never lost a match because we didn’t play or because the opponent was stronger than us.
“We lost every match because we produce, we don’t kill opponents, we give them life and every opponent that plays against us knows they can score a goal and change the true result.”
Chelsea had several chances to win against Sunderland, but the failure to be defensively solid worried Mourinho the most. It is known that Roman Abramovich wants winning football that is also attractive to watch. How will the latest comments by Mourinho be received by the Russian oligarch?
