Drogba is a major doubt for the World Cup after fracturing an arm in a friendly against Japan. The news is a big blow for Ivory Coast especially given the fact that in spite of being the captain of the team, he is also one of the world’s best strikers. Drogba had already been suffering from a hernia problem and he revealed that he will be having an operation after the World Cup.
The news also is made worse due to the fact that Ivory Coast are in a group which features Brazil and Portugal. They were unlucky in the previous World Cup when they were paired with Argentina and the Netherlands. Ivory Coast were one of the favourites to qualify from the group given Portugal’s poor form going into the World Cup. But now, Portugal with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks
must be the favourites to make it into the next round along with Brazil.
Ivory Coast manager, Sven Goran Eriksson said,
But still, all is not lost for Ivory Coast as they still have some fantastic players in the likes of the Toure brothers and to some extent Kalou.
From a Chelsea perspective, along with the injury to Ballack, it further reduces the Chelsea representatives at the World Cup to 13 players. On the positive side, it gives Drogba some much needed rest after a long and hard season, as he now prepares to be fit for next season assault for trophies with Chelsea.
UPDATE: The Bionic man, Drogba has miraculously recovered and is expected to start in the opening match.
