In a major setback both for Chelsea and Ghana, Michael Essien is ruled out of the World Cup 2010 for Ghana. Essien is one of the best midfielders in the world and Chelsea fans have every right to be worried about him given how many games he has missed during the last two seasons.
Fit he would walk into any team in the world. But injuries have meant that he has missed 12 months in the past two years mainly due to injuries that involve his knee and there are fears that he might become another Hargreaves, although his fitness problems are due to tendinitis.
One of the main reasons why Chelsea didn’t
progress in the Champions League this year is due to the fact that Essien went missing at the crucial time. Had he been fit for both the matches against Inter Milan, Chelsea would have certainly progressed to the next round. So it is yet another delay, but let us hope that he is fit just in time for Chelsea’s pre-season tour.
Do you think Essien is becoming the next Hargreaves?
