Fernando Torres has made 119 appearances and scored 31 goals for Chelsea in all competitions since his arrival in 2011. It is not a good return for any striker. It is especially not good when you have cost £50 million in transfer fees and a further £180,000 per week in wages. There have been no signs of the striker returning to the glory days at Liverpool.
In an interview to Daily Mail, the striker has admitted that even he does not know the reason for his poor performance.
One of his best performances in a Chelsea shirt came in the 3-1 win over Rubin Kazan in the Europa League quarter-finals. The 29-year-old has admitted that he has struggled at Chelsea since arriving more than two years ago. However, he is refusing to give up his struggle to become a success at Chelsea.
“I want to do the things I used to do all my life. I did them at Atletico, I did them at Liverpool and I am not doing them at Chelsea. I am working on it.
“If I knew the reason, I would fix it in one minute. But the only way to fix these things is to work at it.
“I am training every day and I will never, ever give up.”
Torres has been heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea in the summer. His former club Atletico Madrid has been spoken of as one of the destinations for the striker. However, after featuring in the Chelsea 2013/14 home kit launch teaser video, one can be sure that Torres is definitely staying at Chelsea at least for the next season.
However, will he be able to get back to his old self? I doubt it very much because it has been more than two years and he still continues to struggle in front of goal. The arrival of yet another manager in the summer – to replace Benitez – is certainly not going to make things easier.
