Tottenham were interested in Conor Gallagher before the New Year, even though Chelsea True Blue explained why Chelsea wouldn’t sell. Spurs believed the 23-year-old would improve their midfield and put up £35m for his signature, but Chelsea requested £60m.
It was unlikely Gallagher would leave his boyhood club for their fierce rivals, but Chelsea fear Financial Fair Play retribution. Todd Boehly is course-correcting after spending £1bn on new players since his 2022-takeover, so some valuable assets could be sold.
But the January transfer window has been open for three weeks and Gallagher’s situation is unchanged, so what’s the latest?
Tottenham pulling out of a deal

Sports broadcaster Ben Jacobs recently said on Twitter that Chelsea wouldn’t sell Gallagher for less than £45m up front. Despite his importance, Gallagher’s contract having two years to run made him more expendable than others, Jacobs added.
He also noted that Tottenham wouldn’t up their offer for the England international from £35m. Ultimately, Gallagher wants to stay at Stamford Bridge and Mauricio Pochettino wants to keep him, so Chelsea aren’t upset.
Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider believes the Lilywhites are pulling out of a deal. Spurs want a midfielder but haven’t opened formal talks with Chelsea for Gallagher, and they’re running out of time.
Chelsea shouldn’t sell Gallagher

Even if Tottenham did match Chelsea’s asking price for the 23-year-old, there’s no guarantee it would be accepted. Gallagher has featured in 26 of Chelsea’s 27 games across the board this season, so he’s indispensable. He captains the side and usually plays every minute when he’s on the pitch.
Chelsea wouldn’t leave themselves short without enough time in the transfer window to replace Gallagher either. It would be a foolish business move that could negatively affect their second half of the campaign. Boehly has an eye on Financial Fair Play, hence why Chelsea are selling assets, but Gallagher won’t be a casualty.
