Romelu Lukaku has made it clear he is determined to become an integral part of José Mourinho’s Chelsea team this season. The striker is back at Stamford Bridge following a successful loan spell with West Brom last season, finishing the season with 17 Premier League goals to his name in a sensational campaign playing under former Chelsea coach, Steve Clarke.
The Belgium international has been linked with another temporary switch away from the club this season in order to gain more experience, but the 20-year old has made it clear he is looking to prove himself at Chelsea under newly appointed boss, Mourinho.
“I want to improve as much as I can and be an important figure for this club hopefully. I am very ambitious and I am also very young, and I want to work hard and play as much as I can but it is up to me. If I keep going like I did last year I think it will not be a problem.” – Lukaku.
With so many strikers in the squad, Mourinho is going to have to decide which players he has in his plans this season and which players need to leave.
Lukaku’s hopes of being given a chance this season may depend on the futures of Fernando Torres or Demba Ba. If either of those forwards leaves Chelsea before the end of the transfer window, Mourinho could do a lot worse than hand a chance to the powerful Belgian.
“It is good to be back. It was always my aim to come back so now that I am here I am happy. I am really determined to do well and hopefully help the team to success.” – Lukaku
Last season proved that Lukaku has everything needed to become a genuine top Premier League striker, achieving that in a modest West Brom team. It remains to be seen just what the youngster could achieve playing alongside a higher quality of player.
