Moises Caicedo secured a point for Chelsea against Manchester United on Sunday with a sweet first-time volley. The 23-year-old scored only his second goal for Chelsea and it cancelled out Bruno Fernandes’ penalty.
United looked like they might run away with a result after taking the lead with only 20 minutes remaining. But Chelsea wouldn’t be denied and made sure they left Old Trafford with a point.
Both sides hit the woodwork in the first half
Chelsea had a great opportunity to score after Noni Madueke got on the end of a Cole Palmer corner, but his header struck the post. Levi Colwill struck the rebound wide but may feel he could have done better.
United would hit the woodwork themselves when Marcus Rashford was unmarked at the back post. Bruno Fernandes found Rashford with a diagonal ball from deep, but the 27-year-old couldn’t keep his shot down. It struck the post and went over.
Those were the best opportunities of the first half, but the game would liven up significantly after the break.
Chelsea should be happy with a point
Pedro Neto came close to breaking the deadlock after firing an effort just wide of the far post. It looked destined for the bottom corner as Andre Onana was beaten, but it just veered away.
United would make Chelsea pay for spurning the opportunity, taking the lead from the spot after Rasmus Hojlund was brought down in the area. Casemiro picked out Hojlund in the box, but Robert Sanchez dived in as he was taking his second touch away from goal.
Fernandes made no mistake from the spot, sending Sanchez the wrong way, giving Chelsea a mountain to climb at Old Trafford. They did respond almost immediately, however, through Caicedo on the volley.
The 23-year-old hit a first-time effort on the edge of the box after United headed away a corner. It crept into the bottom corner, giving Onana no chance of reaching it.
United nearly regained the lead through Alejandro Garnacho. He was unmarked at the back post and volleyed an effort just over the bar. Nevertheless, Chelsea held on for a draw.
