Chelsea drew 2-2 with Brentford on Saturday and Mauricio Pochettino blasted the Blues’ defending at the Gtech Community Stadium. For both goals conceded, Chelsea failed to clear their lines and didn’t get a solid tackle in.
Pochettino was left frustrated and didn’t mince his words in a post-match interview. He told reporters: “We didn’t start well in the second half and conceded some crosses. The game was really open.
“We must defend better, of course, at a very difficult place to come. We were not consistent at this moment. We conceded and that changed the game, their belief increased. In the end, we are disappointed a little bit in the way we conceded.”
Mistakes were rife against Brentford

Brentford’s first goal came from Mads Roerslev in the 50th minute. Malo Gusto was beaten to a lofty cross and Moises Caicedo failed to put in an effective challenge. The ball ran to Roerslev who couldn’t miss from six yards out. It was an avoidable goal had Gusto beaten his man to the ball.
Reaction time was slow in the box and then players watched as Roerslev was unmarked and in possession.
Brentford’s second goal was a brilliant overhead kick by Yoane Wissa, but Chelsea were at fault again. A cross into the box wasn’t headed out far enough and deflected to Wissa on the penalty spot. He performed a fantastic bicycle kick that gave Djordje Petrovic no chance.
Pochettino will definitely be frustrated that a looping cross caused so much mayhem.
Chelsea have been porous all campaign

Pochettino named a back-three of Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah and Axel Disasi, with Ben Chilwell and Malo Gusto as wing-backs. It didn’t exactly work against Brentford, but Chelsea haven’t shut out many sides this season.
The Blues have conceded 43 goals from 26 Premier League games. They haven’t kept a clean sheet in the league since January’s 1-0 win over Fulham. After shipping two goals against Brentford, Chelsea have now conceded four goals in their last two games.
Chelsea conceded 47 goals for the entirety of 2022/23, so they look set to surpass that figure in the league. Pochettino needs to find a way to tighten up Chelsea’s backline so they can get some consistency.
