Mauricio Pochettino made a damning admission after Chelsea suffered a 4-2 defeat at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. The 51-year-old conceded he hasn’t been good enough during his time as Chelsea manager and shouldered the blame.
Per Ron Walker of Sky Sports, Pochettino told reporters: “I think we are all not good enough, that’s the reality. Myself also, as the first person responsible.” It comes as Chelsea suffered back-to-back defeats for the second time in as many months. The Blues sit 11th in the table with two-thirds of the season gone.
Could Pochettino get the sack?
Pochettino is out of contract at Chelsea next year and won’t be in line for a renewal unless things change. The Blues are in the EFL Cup final, to be played in late-February, but their league campaign has been disappointing.
Chelsea finished 12th in the table last season with 44 points, suffering 16 defeats (42%). The Blues have already suffered 10 defeats (43%) this campaign, so there’s been no improvement.
Pochettino has defended his team for having a low average age, but he won’t get a free pass. The Argentine is reportedly taking home £200k-per-week/£11m-a-year in wages, so Todd Boehly wants a return on his investment.
Boehly won’t be happy with his investment
Chelsea have spent more than £1bn on players since Boehly took over in 2022, so they need a revenue increase. The Blues have changed their transfer policy to stay in line with Financial Fair Play, but it’s not enough.
Chelsea made over £200m from selling players over the summer, but they can’t keep shipping valuable assets. The West London club must start being sustainable, and broadcasting can be very lucrative.
Playing in the Europa League or Champions League entitles Chelsea to prize and TV money, but their only hope is the cup. That might save Pochettino’s job, if he seals European football for next season.
