Jose Mourinho has once again tried to lower the expectations of Chelsea. Ever since taking over for the second time, the Portuguese has been reiterating that winning the title with this squad will be tough. Ahead of the encounter with Southampton, he has stated that this squad is not capable of achieving things that people expect them to do. According to Chelsea’s official site, he said:
I always said my job this time would be a different job profile. I do my work the best I can.
I came here to give my best, knowing that this team and this squad couldn’t be ready to achieve what people probably think we have to achieve.
Mourinho is effectively saying that he tried his best and he is not at fault if Chelsea failed to win the league this season. He is making such statements even before Christmas!
This is unlikely to make Roman Abramovich happy, as the club has spent close to £150 million in the last two transfer windows. We have some of the best young attacking talents like Juan Mata, Oscar, and Eden Hazard. There is also no shortage of experienced players (read that as Frank Lampard, John Terry, and Fernando Torres etc) who are capable of guiding those young players.
There are only a couple of players in the squad (Schurrle and Willian) who are new to the league. The Portuguese may argue that his strikeforce is not great, but he was part of the decision that allowed Romelu Lukaku to go out on loan.
The Premier League is certainly more competitive than in 2004 with Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool emerging as title contenders. However, Chelsea had the best squad in the division back then, and this is also the case this time around if you take out City. As good as Arsenal and Liverpool have been so far, they cannot match Chelsea’s squad strength.
On the positive note, he has said poor performances worry him more than being sacked for the second time. He continued:
I’m the kind of guy that year after year, title after title, I don’t change. I lose, I’m not happy. We don’t play well, I’m not happy.
I lose, I want the next match. I lose, I want the next training session to try to improve.
When you are the type of personality that puts pressure on yourself, I don’t think you need to be worried about anything else.
Mourinho, it is time to buckle up and start thinking about winning the title.
Chelsea as a term have no problem in any position but Lampard and Osca can’t play week in weekout, onlike Lampard is age already,is not suppose to play 90min again also Osco if he most play he shouldn’t be playing all the time since Chelsea has player like Mata at thesame position.Mata is not a bench player,Mata remain Chelsea key player. So Morinho should stop bench or wrongly position him.Chelsea have al players needed to win league.Let no one give us flimsy excuses.
you are 100% correct brother. Mourinhos continuous benching of Mata and playing aged Lampard 90mins week in week out have kept us were we are in the league table. Mourinho does not have any reason not to win the league.
Chelsea have a great players but it depend on Mario how to use them Mata is great player for two seasons and is not use mata try to convert your player
José has no excuse to give, Chelsea has recruited the best squad since last 4 seasons, just a lack of manager and some other problems. Not featuring Mata & Torres in d game is a wrong decision made by Mourinho.
It’s seem 2 me dat lmprd has been brfin moriho, if not hw cld he b playin lmprd instead of mata.
Little question for you. Where have we finished in the league the last two seasons? You’re right ITS NOT EVEN CHRISTMAS we are still in everything and the team is still young. Get some perspective. Some fans are ridiculous!
LITTLE ANSWER FOR YOU::: In those last two seasons, we won the Champions league, Europe league and the FA cup….. Is there any assurances of giving the first in place of the league he is shying away from? We have a good enough squad he sud stop excuses and get to work:
frank lampard is no more capable 4 d team again cus chelsea av young talented player pls nd pls mourinho should out lampard 4rm d squard.
Pathetic article. We are on everycompetition and as you say yourself ITS NOT EVEN CHRISTMAS….
Open your eyes
Agreed Don,
Some fans are too quick to judge especially after taking into account the last two seasons league position. These are probably the same people that thought AVB needed more time at Chelsea!
Keep the faith. In Jose we trust
