Chelsea have made significant additions to the squad in the transfer window. We have brought in £66 million worth of attacking talent to the club in this summer. However, there has been a total disregard for the club’s defensive options during this period. Of course, there has been the talk of signing the likes of Maicon, but none have materialized.
Just over a week remains for the transfer window to be shut, and the transfer rumours are getting hot. The Marseille defender Cesar Azpilicueta has been linked with Chelsea for quite some time now. The 22-year-old defender impressed with the French club last season, although they struggled as a team. Due to the financial difficulties faced by the club, he is expected to be sold in a cut-price deal.
Following the release of Jose Bosingwa, Branislav Ivanovic remains as one of the recognised right backs at the club alongside Paulo Ferreira. As a result, there was a real need to bring a quality right back.
The Spanish defender ticks all the boxes and it was thought that Chelsea had agreed a €8 million fee with the French club. However, the president of Marseille has now confirmed that the club has not received any offer for the player, but has conceded that he would be willing to sell him if the price is right.
Marseille president Vincet Labrune said
“I do not know who started this story, but they are totally wrong.
“It surely comes from agents that have an interest in the deal.
“Maybe they imagine that by running around making a noise about 8million euros it will make a difference, but it will not.
“For the moment nothing is happening.”
Despite this admission, Chelsea will be keen to bring in another defender and a striker before the end of the transfer window.
