Watch the highlights of Real Madrid vs Chelsea here
[/box]Chelsea have lost the 100% win record in pre-season after a 3-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the Guinness International Champions Cup final 2013. It was a friendly and pre-season match only in words, as fans witnessed an exciting football match. Both teams were looking to win the match from kick-off, but unfortunately, there was only one team on top of things which was reflected by the odds.
Real Madrid have not changed substantially from last season, and it certainly showed on the pitch. They were slick and confident in attack, while they defended much better than Chelsea.
“For me, it’s perfect we made mistakes so that we have them to work on. As I said last week, we had five victories in pre-season and zero points. Now we have five victories and one defeat, we still have zero points, it’s not a drama.
We came to the US searching for good matches; we had Inter, AC, Real Madrid and Roma. We had the matches we wanted so much and needed so much.” – Mourinho.
Mourinho will have been extremely disappointed with his Chelsea team, as they were second best in all areas. Chelsea did not create too many chances and did not defend well either. The match, though, provided certain positives. The goal from Ramires to equalise – after Real Madrid have taken the lead through Marcelo – is a perfect example. It involved at least five players with great passing for Ramires to replicate the goals he scored against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.
Unlike in the last few pre-season matches, Mourinho did not make many changes at half-time. Romelu Lukaku was disappointing in the first half and he was replaced by Fernando Torres. Lukaku was isolated in the first half, as Chelsea played more of a 4-5-1 rather than a 4-3-3 formation.
Kevin De Bruyne, Victor Moses, and Torres made the second half much better for Chelsea. Chelsea dominated the first 20 minutes of the second half, but were unable to find the goal that would have brought them level.
Ultimately, the defending was not up to the mark as there was many moments of concentration loss that proved to be costly. Ivanovic and Gary Cahill were not at their best. Ashley Cole was the pick of the defenders, as he was once again very good. Cristiano Ronaldo was definitely amazing, but he could have been certainly stopped with some better defending.
Thankfully, it is just a pre-season game.
