Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on signing a THIRD Atletico Madrid player in the summer. According to reports, the blues are closing in on signing defender Filipe Luis for around £20 million.
This fee will activate his release clause of £19.5 million. If this transfer does take place, it would make no sense at all since Chelsea would be far better off signing a player like Luke Shaw from Southampton.
Chelsea are in the market for a new left back after allowing Ashley Cole to leave on a free. Ryan Bertrand, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, is also expected to be sold. This would leave ‘right back’ Cesar Azpilicueta as the only player capable of playing on the left side.
Filipe Luis was one of the top defenders from last season. He was included in the UEFA Champions League Team of the Season. At 28 years of age, he will mark a return to Chelsea’s transfer policy of signing experienced players. This was the case during Mourinho’s previous spell. He is unlikely to offer much apart from a couple of good years (if he settles well).
Shaw, on the other hand, has had little top-level experience, but at just 18 years old, he has a long time left in football; and he is a Chelsea fan.
Chelsea have also been linked with Atletico striker Diego Costa and it is widely believed that we have agreed a £32 million deal for the 25-year-old. Along with it, we are also in discussions to get Tiago Mendes, who is available on a free, back to Stamford Bridge. The Portuguese played for us in the 2004-05 season.
Therefore, it is highly likely that the blues could have THREE Atletico Madrid players next season.
