Euro 2012, what a brilliant tournament it has been. Spain came into the tournament as the favourites and peaked at just the right stage – unlike Italy – to win the Euro 2012. The best aspect of the tournament for me has to be Fernando Torres winning the Golden Boot award. Many would not have put him close to winning it prior to the start of the tournament.
If there were any disputes about the Spanish dominance at the international level, then this win surely ends those. This is arguably the greatest team in the history of world football, and we – Chelsea fans – can proudly say that Fernando Torres was a part of it, and to a lesser extent, Juan Mata as well.
Mata was almost absent from the tournament, but he comes on and score with his first touch. This is the man who was instrumental in helping Chelsea win the Champions League this season. He has been responsible for more than 60 goals we scored during the season. Yet, he cannot get a look into the first team. Such is the quality they possess right now.
It is easy to see why Chelsea have already spent more than £50 million this summer. This is the level of success Roman Abramovich wants, but he also wants it in the same style. Even I am starting to hate the constant comparisons of any defensive display by any team to Chelsea’s defensive way of winning the Champions League title. Hence, I can understand the frustration of a man who has spent more than £1 billion for this club.
Playing like the Spanish will not happen overnight, but the additions of Eden Hazard and Marin will go a long way to ensure that.
I do not expect the domination to continue. Every good thing has to end. It has happened with the great Brazilian teams, and it will one day happen to Spain. However, this era will never be forgotten.
