As you will know footballers aren’t just born great, most players started as youngsters at a club that no one has ever heard of. John Terry was no exception. He first started playing football for a local Sunday League side called Senrab, before joining Chelsea’s youth side aged just 14. Surprisingly he didn’t begin his career as the solid centre back that he is known as today, he initially played in midfield and only moved due to a lack of defenders.
Terry made his debut for the First Team on the 28th October 1998, before going on a short loan to Nottingham Forest in 2000. He first became a regular on the side during the 2001-2002 season, where he captained the side for the first time on the 5th of December. Terry came into his own in the 2004-2005 season when he became the club captain. He led Chelsea to win the Premier League while holding the best defensive record in the league’s history, quite an impressive year. Terry has continued to be a rock in Chelsea’s defence up to the present day.
Controversy
Unfortunately Terry is known not only for his football. In 2001 Chelsea charged Terry and three others two weeks wages after they were drunkenly mocking American tourists shortly after the 9/11 attacks. Terry was also a little wayward when it came to women. Now married to Toni Poole, Terry said before for the wedding “I’ve misbehaved and slept with girls behind her back and that’s not right. She knows about it all now and we’re moving on. I’m not going to cheat on her ever again.” However he didn’t keep to his word, in January 2010 it was reported that he had an affair with the French model, Vanessa Perroncel. I bet you’re wondering how a man who looks like John Terry, not a looker, managed to bag himself a French model. The answer could be that he has a suitably large package to offer.
Hopefully John Terry can be remembered for his footballing prowess. At Chelsea he will always be known for being a solid centre back, winning him the Chelsea Player of the year in both 2001 and 2006. John Terry will certainly be missed when he eventually has to leave the blue’s, for now at least he is still here.
