An incredible match yet again ruined by the referee, as Chelsea could manage only a 1-1 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane. Tottenham took the lead in the first half through Gylfi Sigurdsson. His 19th minute goal was a deserved lead for the home team, who had the better of chances. It was a disappointing opening 20 minutes from Chelsea, as we rarely ventured into the final third.
After 35 minutes, though, Chelsea finally woke up and started creating some meaningful chances. Chelsea definitely were the better team going into halftime break. Mourinho’s decision to bring Juan Mata for John obi Mikel at half-time was an inspired substitution. Mata provided the assist for John Terry to score from a set piece in the 65th minute.
Fernando Torres’ second yellow card in the 81st minute was a sore point in the match, as Chelsea looked like the only team capable of taking a win.
Match highlights:
Mourinho’s reaction:
The referee tried his best. He tried to do his job. But some foreign players [Jan Vertonghen], when they come to England, still keep their culture and it’s a disgrace. To do that to a person from your same job I think that’s a disgrace.
I hope the committee understands he [Torres] has to play next weekend. The red card is, of course, a big mistake. I hope they do justice with him. I have to read perfectly well the rules to see if we can appeal a second yellow card – I’m not so sure.
