Chelsea once again asserted the fact that they should be considered as serious title contenders this season with a 4-2 win over Tottenham. The first league win at White Hart Lane since 2005 helped Chelsea maintain the four-point advantage at the top of the table. Juan Mata has been in spectacular form over the last couple of matches, and he was once again instrumental in Chelsea’s victory.
The Spaniard was overshadowed in the first few weeks of the campaign following the arrival of Eden Hazard and Oscar. However, he demonstrated that he still has a major say in proceedings at Chelsea with two goals and one assist.
Gary Cahill scored a thunderbolt from a corner in the first half, but Chelsea conceded two quick goals in the second half. It appeared destined to send Chelsea to yet another defeat in this fixture, but Mata scored two quick goals just after the hour mark to give Chelsea the lead in the match.
Eden Hazard’s first-time ball was extremely crucial in the third goal scored by Chelsea. Mata then let the ball for Daniel Sturridge to score a simple tap in the dying moments of the match to confirm the victory.
Even the opposition manager Andre Villas-Boas was in full praise of the Chelsea midfield trio of Eden Hazard, Juan Mata, and Oscar. It would be hard for anyone to criticise Chelsea’s style of play now.
After the match, the Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo said,
“We want to win games in a way that we think we can with the players we have. Our philosophy is to play in a certain way because we believe that, with the players we have, that’s the way to win games.
“We have a good squad which I’m happy with and every time a player comes in they have performed well. We have a good base and are able to make two or three changes without noticing too much.”
The team line-ups:
